Antarctic Bottom Water Jets Flowing from the Vema Channel

چکیده
Properties of the abyssal current Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) from Vema Channel are studied based on temperature, salinity, and velocity profiler (CTD/LADCP) data. Previous studies over a period almost 30 years revealed that very intense AABW exists in Channel. Later, it was found this consists two branches. One branch spreads bottom channel; other is elevated western wall channel. The deepest decays after passes approximately 100 km while upper one continues further to North Atlantic source waters Canary Cabo Verde basins Atlantic. Data analysis suggested jet splits into two. these descends down canyon at 24°30′ S, (the third one) remains continental slope, indications its existence also 24°00′ S. This research analyzes pathway can be traced up latitude 24° Velocity measurements 2022 allowed us confirm branch.

Decadal warming of the coldest Antarctic Bottom Water flow through the Vema Channel
[1] A decadal warming trend of Antarctic Bottom Water flowing through the Vema Channel is reanalyzed. Our data base consists of 94 high precision, full depth stations from 19 visits to the Vema Sill plus twelve stopovers at two additional key locations. Originally a long-term temperature increase in the near-bottom jet was noted from 1992 onward, after a period of rather constant abyssal temper...
متن کاملShallow water modeling of Antarctic Bottom Water Crossing the Equator
[1] The dynamics of abyssal equator-crossing flows are examined by studying simplified models of the flow in the equatorial region in the context of reduced-gravity shallow water theory. A simple ‘‘frictional geostrophic’’ model for one-layer cross-equatorial flow is described, in which geostrophy is replaced at the equator by frictional flow down the pressure gradient. This model is compared v...
متن کاملThe spreading of Antarctic bottom water in the tropical Atlantic
Hydrographic and tracer [chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), component F11] data in the tropical Atlantic off Brazil taken in spring 1994 are used to describe the development of the water mass characteristics of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) between 10°S and 11°N. To compute the AABW transports, geostrophic computations and directly measured velocity fields are combined. Velocity profiles were measured w...
متن کاملAntarctic Bottom Water Variability in a Coupled Climate Model
The natural variability of the Weddell Sea variety of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) is examined in a long-term integration of a coupled climate model. Examination of passive tracer concentrations suggests that the model AABW is predominantly sourced in the Weddell Sea. The maximum rate of the Atlantic sector Antarctic overturning ( atl) is shown to effectively represent the outflow of Weddell S...

A survey of the current field over the South Scotia Ridge, obtained with a lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (LADCP), is presented. There is a pattern of northward (southward) flow on the western (eastern) side of each of four deep passages in the ridge, which is supported by tracer measurements. The net full-depth LADCP-referenced geostrophic transport over the ridge is 2277 Sv (1 Sv=1...
